Jump Starting a Car Battery
Jump-Starting a Car Battery: Do’s and Don’ts
A dead car battery can bring your day to a standstill, but jump-starting isn’t as simple as it seems. HandyMan Goa shares expert tips to help you jump-start safely—and avoid common mistakes that can damage your car or risk your safety.
Do’s: Safe Jump-Start Steps

- Park both cars on level ground, away from traffic, and switch off both engines. Ensure handbrakes are engaged, doors are shut, and both vehicles are NOT touching each other.
- Check batteries for leaks, cracks, or corrosion. If damaged, don’t attempt a jump-start—call a professional instead.
- Identify battery terminals (Red = Positive [+], Black = Negative [–]). Wipe terminals clean for good contact.
- Connect jump cables in this order:
- Start the booster car first, let it run 2–3 minutes. Try starting the dead car; if it doesn’t start, wait a few more minutes and retry.
- Remove cables in reverse order: First, black clamp from engine block, second from booster battery; then red clamps from both batteries.
- Let your revived car run for 15–30 minutes, or drive to recharge the battery.
Don’ts: Mistakes to Avoid
- Never jump-start a leaking, frozen, or physically damaged battery. This risks explosions, acid burns, and serious injury—call for help instead.
- Don’t let cables touch each other or any metal surfaces. This causes dangerous sparks.
- Don’t connect the black cable to the negative terminal of the dead battery. Go for the engine block or chassis instead for safety.
- Don’t remove jump cables while engines are running. This can damage sensitive electronics in modern vehicles.
- Avoid jump-starting near open flames, dangling jewelry, or wet conditions. Batteries emit flammable gases, so keep sparks, cigarettes, and metal away.
- Don’t keep trying if your car won’t start after a few attempts. The battery may need replacement or professional diagnosis.
